I like to incorporate visual pieces of art in the class so that students look at the world differently. In 500 words, students should explain what the author of the image (a painting by Henri Matisse) coveysto the audience. We cannot merely describe the photograph; however, we can use description to help the audience of the assignment (the instructor) better understand the interpretation put forth. What do the elements of the photograph represent? Colors? figures? setting?

Once we figure that outand there is no correct answerwe then synthesize the parts to come up with the meaning of the photograph.

Begin with a sentence that explains what the artist is trying to explain to the audiencethe artists thesis statement. Finish up the response by discussing how each element(supporting reasons)helps you to reach that conclusion.

*Do not use autobiographical information or research the imageI want to see your critical thinking. However, I do encourage you to consult one another through the discussion board. What are your colleagues thinking?

We should compose the assignment without using I think. Students tend to rely on such unnecessary explanations in their writing. We do not have to tell the instructor what we are doing (I understand thatthe individual student is thinking) since we are showing the product of the assignment.
