While the range scores is not typically considered a reliable description of variability because it fails to address the distance between scores, it is used in certain situations. For example, the interquartile range is typically used in situations where the central tendency is measured by the median; this applies to data with extreme scores, undetermine values, and nominal scales of measurement (Gravetter et al., 2021). Additionally, the interquartile range can be useful in samples where there are a few extreme low and high scores that could make a standard range score useless. The Interquartile range is found by measuring the distance between the highest score or upper real limit of the first 25% of the data, known as the first quartile, and the lower real limit of the third quartile, which contains the top 25% of the data (Gravetter et al., 2021).
