Hey Everyone, lets talk about this term, Artist! I cannot tell you how many times Ive heard this term being used, where I want to jump in the discussion and say, would we really want to call them an artist? Then again, who am I to say who is or isnt an artist. When I was doing my undergraduate studies, my professor told all of us that we were not artists; we were students who were in school to learn the techniques and tools to make art so that someday we could hopefully become artists. Many people share the opinion of my professor in that the term artist implies that you make a living off of you art. Over the past 10 plus years of teaching art, I still go back and forth with this debate; mostly with myself and in my own head, but the questions still persists! Who can be called an artist and why? Does a homeowner who does projects weekend projects around the house call themselves a construction worker? What about the term cook or chef? I cook most every day, so does my wife, are we chefs? So what is about the term artist that gets used so liberally where someone can make art and not do it for a living, yet still call themselves an artist. Choose one of the following topics to expand upon and place your answer on the discussion board. Who can be considered an artist and Why? Do you feel that artists contribute to our knowledge of history? How and why?
